"Hi. I'm Dave Jones and I am a teacher of carpentry and joinery at Oldham College.

Fourteen months ago I was just a joiner, I didn't have any experience at all in teaching. Teaching was just a totally new world to me, but it's great, I love it and really enjoy it.

When I first heard about the possibility of a career in further education I wondered whether I would be eligible as I'd never ever been on a course and needed a level 3 NVQ in carpentry and joinery to qualify. Even though I'd been a carpenter and joiner for 30 years I didn't have that qualification. However, once I'd looked into it I gained that qualification very quickly because of the experience I had.

What are the main things I enjoy? Well, it's things that you don't really think about, like setting up a classroom, making sure everyone can see and getting to know the different types of students you've got to accommodate. It's just really enjoyable and it's totally changed my life."
