The Pass on Your Skills initiative aims to raise awareness of the opportunities that are available for both technical and vocational practitioners to take on tutoring roles - and by doing so, pass on their skills to the workforce of the future.
Pass on Your Skills is also a way of ensuring that further education and staff working within further education and work based learning have the skills and expertise required to meet the needs of the sectors they serve. In turn, Pass on Your Skills will help the further education sector to fill key vacancies in areas where there may be a skills shortage.
So how does Pass on Your Skills work? The Pass on Your Skills initiative is changing. We are currently developing new ways to enable vocational professionals to pass on their skills by becoming a teacher, tutor or trainer of their profession in the further education (FE) sector. We are currently working on updating the Pass on Your Skills website to provide you with information on the initiative, and details of the new ways that Pass on Your Skills will help industry professionals to move into a teaching career. In the meantime, you may find the following information on Pass on Your Skills useful:
Applying to Pass on Your Skills: We are not currently accepting applications to the Pass on Your Skills initiative. However, from spring 2009 we will welcome applications from professionals with qualifications and experience in the following industry sectors:
- - Construction and the built environment
- - STEM - science, technology, engineering and maths
- - Skills for Life - Literacy and Numeracy
- - Retail and Commercial Services
- - Health and social care
Please note: health & social care and engineering professionals who did not complete an application following the last campaigns which took place in February 2008 will have the opportunity to apply to Pass on Your Skills from spring 2009.
What can Pass on Your Skills offer you? Pass on Your Skills is changing and will no longer be funding applicants on Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS) courses. Instead, we will help to provide applicants with a more direct route to becoming a teacher, tutor or trainer, which will involve matching applicants' skills and experience with FE organisations in a similar geographical area who have vacancies for teachers, tutors or trainers. Further details of this support service will be available at www.passonyourskills.com from 2009.
Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector course: Although the Pass on Your Skills initiative is no longer offering funded Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS) courses to successful applicants, if you still wish to pursue training on the PTLLS course, you can enquire at the City & Guilds website for local training providers or at your local college for details of PTLLS course dates and fees. Please note that this option will probably require you to self-fund the PTLLS course, although each college will be able to confirm their funding requirements with you. To find your local PTLLS providers simply go to the City & guilds website at: http://www.cityandguilds.com/cps/rde/xchg/SID-3C862300-D436007F/cgonline/hs.xsl/17976.html?search_term=ptlls and enter your postcode in the box on the left hand side of the screen.
Do you have an existing teaching qualification? If you already have a teaching qualification and you would like to speak to an advisor about the next steps to becoming a teacher, tutor or trainer in the further education sector, please call the Lifelong Learning UK Information and Advice Service. The telephone number is 020 7936 5798 or you can email advice@lluk.org.
We hope that you have found this information useful. We will update the information on the website as soon as we can. Thank you for your patience.
